COMPETING SERIES: These are the Allison, Huntsville, Ivan, Judson, Kennebec, Kenridge, Lindstrom, Napier, Rossville, Sturkie, and Worthen series. All of the above except Ivan soils have free carbonates at a depth greater than 40 inches. Ivan soils have free carbonates within a depth of 10 inches.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Kahola soils are on flood plains of larger streams that drain areas of limestone and calcareous shales. Slope gradients seldom exceed 1 percent but range from 0 to 2 percent. Kahola soils formed in calcareous silty alluvium. Mean annual precipitation ranges from about 30 to 33 inches, and mean annual temperature ranges from about 54 to 56 degrees F. Thornthwaite Annual P-E Index ranges from about 50 to 68.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Chase, Clime, Eudora, Florence, and Irwin soils. Chase soils have an argillic horizon and are on higher part of the flood plains. Clime, Florence, and Irwin are on adjacent uplands. All are more clayey. The coarse-silty Eudora are generally on terraces.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is low. Permeability is moderate. Kahola soils are occasionally flooded.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas of Kahola are cultivated. Corn and alfalfa are the principal crops. Native vegetation is tall grass prairie with scattered hardwood trees.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: East-central Kansas. The series is not extensive; their total extent is about 4,500 acres.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Salina, Kansas
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Riley County, Kansas, 1970.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Mollic epipedon: the zone from the surface of the soil to a depth of about 35 inches (Ap, A, and AC horizons)
Udic moisture regime.
