VERDIGRIS SERIES

The Verdigris series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in silty alluvium on floodplains in the Cherokee Prairies
major land resource area (MLRA 112). Slope ranges from 0 to 3 percent. The mean annual precipitation is 35 to 47 inches and the mean annual air temperature is 57 to 65 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-silty, mixed, superactive, thermic Cumulic Hapludolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Verdigris silt loam-in a cultivated field. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 7 inches; very dark brown (l0YR2/2) silt loam, very dark grayish brown (l0YR3/2) dry; weak medium granular structure; slightly hard, friable; moderately acid; abrupt smooth boundary.

A--7 to 28 inches; very dark brown (l0YR2/2) silt loam, very dark grayish brown (l0YR3/2) dry; moderate medium granular structure; slightly hard, friable; scattered worm casts; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the A horizon is ll to 34 inches.)

AC--28 to 46 inches; dark brown (l0YR3/3) silt loam, brown (l0YR4/3) dry; weak medium granular structure; slightly hard, friable; scattered worm casts; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (9 to 30 inches thick)

C--46 to 60 inches; brown (l0YR4/3) silt loam, brown (l0YR5/3) dry; few fine faint yellowish brown (l0YR4/4) redoximorphic concentration masses; massive; slightly hard, friable; few fine pores; slightly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Montgomery County, Kansas; about l mile west of Elk City on the flood plain west of the Verdigris River; 2,200 feet south and 2,300 feet east of the northwest corner of sec. 6, T.32 S.,R.l4 E.

COMPETING SERIES:
Arrington soils are in a wetter climate
Redport soils have free carbonates below depths of l0 inches and subsoils with hue of 2.5YR or 5YR
Taylorbay soils are in the active family

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Landscape: River Valley
Landform: floodplains
Slopes: range is 0 to 3 percent
Parent material: silty alluvium
Average annual precipitation: ranges from 35 to 47 inches
Average annual temperature: ranges from 57 to 65 degrees F
Annual Thornthwaites P-E index: ranges from 62 to 82.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:
Cleora soils are in the coarse-loamy family
Hepler soils are in similar position and are somewhat poorly drained
Lightning soils are in similar positions, in the fine family and poorly drained
Mason soils have a regular decrease in organic matter or has less than .3 percent organic matter 50 inches below the soil surface
Osage soils are on broad floodplains and in the fine family and poorly drained
Radley soils have mollic epipedon less than 24 inches
Wynona soils are somewhat poorly drained

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY:
Drainage: well
Runoff: neglibible to very low
Permeability: moderate
Flooding: occasionally, frequently, or rarely flooded.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas of Verdigris soils are cultivated. Corn, sorghum, alfalfa, and wheat are the principal crops. The remainder is used as woodland, rangeland, or pastureland. Native vegetation is grass or lowland deciduous forest with an understory of grass.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southeastern Kansas, northeastern Oklahoma and southwestern Missouri. The series is extensive.

MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Salina, Kansas

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Montgomery County, Kansas, 1913.

REMARKS:
Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Particle-size control section: The zone from 10 to 40 inches. (Ap, A1, and AC horizons)
Mollic? epipedon: The zone from 0 to 28 inches. (Ap and A horizons)

The assignment of the cation-exchange activity class is inferred from lab data from similar soils in the surrounding area.
