COMPETING SERIES:
Newflat soils--somewhat poorly drained soil (seasonal high water table 6 to 18 inches). Newflat soils are presumed to have toxic levels of aluminum and very slow permeability
Wahee soils--somewhat poorly drained soil on lower coastal plain marine and stream terraces

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Landscape: Southern piedmont and coastal plain
Landform: Stream terraces along streams and rivers
Elevation: 25 to 800 feet above mean sea level
Parent Material: Clayey and loamy fluvial sediments
Mean Annual Air Temperature: 59 to 66 degrees
Mean Annual Precipitation: 38 to 52 inches
Frost Free Period: 200 to 260 days

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:
Altavista soils--moderately well drained soils (seasonal high water table 18 to 30 inches) in fine-loamy family on higher landscapes
Augusta soils--somewhat poorly drained soils (seasonal high water table 12 to 18 inches) in fine-loamy family on similar landscapes
Chewacla soils--somewhat poorly drained soils (seasonal high water table 6 to 24 inches) in fine-loamy family on flood plains
Congaree soils--well to moderately well drained soils (seasonal high water table 30 to 48 inches) that lack argillic horizons and are on floodplains and at the base of slopes
Roanoke soils--are poorly drained soils with seasonal high water table 0 to 12 inches, in a fine family; on flats and in depressions
State soils--well drained soils (seasonal high water table 48 to 72 inches) in fine-loamy family on higher landscapes
Wehadkee soils--poorly drained soils (seasonal high water table 0 to 12 inches) in fine-loamy family on flood plains

Agricultural Drainage Class: Somewhat poorly
Surface Runoff: Slow
Permeability: Slow

USE AND VEGETATION:
Major Uses: Most areas are wooded
Dominant Vegetation: Where forested--blackgum, loblolly pine, water oak, willow oak, swamp chestnut, southern red oak, and sweetgum. Understory species include large gallberry, wax myrtle (southern bayberry), inkberry (bitter gallberry), greenbrier, cane, and sweetbay. Where cultivated--corn, soybeans, and pasture.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT:
Distribution: Stream terraces of North Carolina and Virginia
Extent: Moderate

MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Raleigh, North Carolina

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Sussex County, Virginia; 2006.

REMARKS:
These soils were formerly included with the Wahee series. The central concept of the Wahee series is in the Tidewater MLRA (153B).

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:

Ochric epipedon--the zone from the surface of the soil to 11 inches (A and E horizons)
Albic horizon--the zone from 5 to 11 inches (E horizon)
Argillic horizon--the zone from 11 to 38 inches (Btg1 and Btg2 horizons)
Endosaturation--saturation in all layers to a depth of 80 inches
